'Loose Paint', by Bruce Gridley
Owning a Wooden Wayfarer is a chore,
It’s not something I want to do anymore,
I’ll tell you why in this rhyme,
I will put down my saw to make the time.
Well the paint wouldn’t hold on the Bow section,
I thought that’s funny I had done a good inspection,
Well I hadn’t thought those copper nails would work loose,
But sure they have after thirty years in use.
So each one was plucked from the ply panels like teeth,
I used various tools and contraptions to release,
Then it was on to remove the rot around the area,
How deep was I going with the drill on the Wayfarer!
Well the stringers inside were still intact and adjoined,
I had a small person check inside to do the seek and find,
So I then screwed the panels to the frames,
I really don’t want to do that again!
Lots of glue and cunning put the strength back in lady,
And some lovely green paint applied in plenty,
Much sanding and grinding through the winter and drying too,
Well I spent the time and now hope it will do!
Buoyancy testing passed no problem she’s not a sieve and seems stronger,
I am sure she will now last a little longer,
To see out her days before the new reincarnations take sprout,
It’s nearing the time for Devon Pickle to bow out!
