PARKSTONE WAYFARERS

Parkstone Wayfarer Race Reports 2005

  • Winter Series, Sunday November 27th

In a cold NW wind the racing was close in the brilliant sunshine and ideal sailing conditions. Lucky Dip was first round No.62 with Moonshadow and Watery Moments close behind and challenging for the lead. Watery Moments stole the lead at Quality Residential mark with a good rounding to take the lead and finish first. A tacking duel for second place on the last leg ensued with Lucky Dip winning through.
1st W8088 Watery Moments Colin May and Tony Mcleod.
2nd W8181 Lucky Dip David Moss and Glynn Marples.
3rd W7088 Moonshadow David Veal and Bruce Gridley.

  • Winter Series, Sunday November 20th

In light airs W8088 made a clean getaway to round the windward mark first on the P type course.W7088 rounded second and hoisted the spinnaker and caught up W8088. On the next leg it was very close and W7088 rounded Latham Mark first unceremoniously with most of the Club fleet in attendance. On the last leg to the finish the gradient wind increased and helped W9447 to finish second.
1st W8088 Shooting Stars Richard Readings and David Edwards.
2nd W9447 Silver Greyhound Keith Cameron and Angela Garcia.
3rd W7088 Moonshadow David Veal and Bruce Gridley.

  • Winter Series, Sunday November 13th

In blustery North Easterly F3-4 winds the fleet set off into the shore in fluky winds. Watery Moments made the first gain after the close rounding at the windward mark sailing low to No.49 on the triangular course. Shooting Stars lost distance and Lucky dip chased hard to round third. The new pairing of super-helms in Moonshadow lost out. David Moss in Lucky Dip with lightweight crew Glynn Marples challenged Shooting Stars but was unable to pass.

  • Up to Three Trophy, Saturday 17th September

Saturday 17th September was the last race of the Saturday series, for Wayfarers. All the three helms eligible for the Up to Three Trophy, Glynne Marples, Keith Cameron and John O'Keefe, retired from the race, so the trophy was not awarded this year. Glynne and John both took involuntary trips out of the harbour on a strong ebb tide with light and fickle winds!

  • RNLI Pennant Race, Saturday 24th August

Sat 20 August was the RNLI Pennant race, battled out in a west - north west wind force 3 and with huge holes in it. Watery Moments and Devon Pickle had a battle together all the way through the race, swopping the lead a couple of times. There was also close sailing for third as Shooting stars and Moonshadow fought hard to keep their position. After a great afternoon racing 6288 Devon Pickle Bruce Gridley crewed by Terry Barret mangaged to take the lead on the final leg and take 1st place leaving 9068 Watery Moments Colin May crewed by Sarah in 2nd Place and 8088 Shooting Stars Richard Readings crewed by Pauline finished 3rd after finally pulling away 4th place going to 7088 Moonshadow Dave Veal crewed by Pete Keeping.

  • Crew's Race, Saturday 23rd July

Frank Westfield took the lead in light and fickle winds. However his crew, Keith Cameron, directed Frank to Haven mark instead of Mitchells, at which mark the race was shortened. As the race officer suspected Keith is a new boy, having only raced Wayfarers at Parkstone for about twenty years! Heather Gurney reached the mark first and thus won the race, followed by Sally Bishton. Frank eventually reached the mark in third place!

  • Studland Race, Saturday 2nd July

After a good half hour delay the course was changed from Swanage to Studland. Seven Wayfarers eventually started, with a short beat to the windward mark, No 54 buoy. Devon Pickle rounded the mark first. On the long reach down to Ellis Jones when the wind gusted in between the holes we were planing nicely. Only Devon Pickle hoisted their spinnaker and pulled away with Watery Moments, Shooting Stars and Expeditious giving chase. As all safely passed the Sandbanks Ferry up went Devon Pickle spinnaker to gain a further lead towards No 4 buoy. Expeditious found extra wind and passed Watery Moments, with Shooting stars following round the next mark.

During the long beat to Phil Jones buoy in Studland Bay the lead Devon Pickle had gained up to now was being gobbled up by the three behind . Once round the mark Devon Pickle maintained the lead on a run in a good force four breeze. Up went the spinnakers on some of the boats whilst some flew along goose winged. Everybody had to gybe before rounding the training bank, with Expeditious giving us an entertaining gybe but just managed to recover without loosing third place. Up the main channel we all planed towards the Haven entrance. By now everybody was well spread out, rounding Mitchell's before the finish. The final result was 1st Devon Pickle, 2nd Watery Moments, 3rd Expeditious and 4th Shooting Stars with super-crew Martin Thomas.

  • Fun Race, Sunday 12th June

Ten Wayfarers entered the fun race, organised by Alex Crook. Boats were paired, with supposedly "fast" boats teamed up with corresponding "slow" boats. Crews were swapped at the windward mark, on the beach at Shipstal Point. One boat attempted a "short cut" from there to the next mark at Piccadilly, and sadly finished last! Two boats retired due to the breezy conditions. The event was won by the team of Bruce Gridley, with Terry Berrett, sailing "Devon Pickle" and David Bishton, with Sally, sailing "Tack 'n Over", which will no longer be considered a "slow" boat!

  • Saturday Racing, May 21st

Barrie French, with fearless crew Mark Fisher, was the only Wayfarer to finish the race on Saturday May 21st. Winds gusting to 28 knots persuaded those with concern for life and boat to stay ashore. The Gurneys crossed the start line but the daunting prospect ofbattling all the way out to South Deep led them to retire almost immediately. Bruce Gridley was the only other Wayfarer to launch, but returned before the start.

  • Arripay Pursuit Race

Lynaire Rea, with super-crew Richard Readings(!), was first Wayfarer to finish the Arripay Charity Pursuit Race,on Saturday May 14th. The race started in a good F4, fading to F0, with a long paddle home from NatWest (for the Gurneys!)
