- Saturday Series 30th September
The last chance to venture out to Poole bay dissolved as the wind strengthened
from the South to nearly Force 6. Just four boats ventured out to head for
Latham mark. Colin May started well with Bruce Gridley chasing down the reach
leg to gain the lead before Morris Lane. The beat to Piccadilly saw Watery
Moments back in the lead for the remaining time. Expeditious closed in on the
spinnaker runs in the gusty and switching winds caused by Brownsea Island.
Colin May wins the Saturday series, clinched with this score and also receives
the Saturday Late series Trophy.

- Saturday Series 23rd September
In Fresh south-easterly winds the 12 strong wayfarer fleet traversed the
harbour in lumpy conditions. Devon Pickle was first round Drake mark for the
long run to WH2. Expeditious sailed lower and faster into the lead. On the
return course it was a succession of two sail planing reaches split with a
short beat. Richard and Pauline in Shooting Stars loved it and moved into third
slot after Ray and Jill Scragg washed Blue Jays spinnaker. Good planing
reaches in brilliant warm sunshine made for an enjoy afternoon testing the
skills of many. Steve Haley wins the "Up to Three" trophy proving
that his ability to stay upright was of some use after all.

- Saturday Series 9th September
In strong blustery Easterly winds the early start saw six boats come to the
line. Away first and leading at NC12 was Devon Pickle. She was held off the
reach to Bell by the Barfluer ferry and Moonshadow was thrown around by the
lumpy seas and switching wind left by the ferry and duly retired. Shooting
Stars gained the lead at Morris Lane as Devon Pickle washed the spinnaker,
towing it under the boat on the drop. On the second round, the Devon Pickle
team used their superior chunkiness to regain the lead on the reach to Bell
Buoy from the lightweights in Shooting Stars to put another first in the bag.
Dave Bishton and now fully trained crew Sally finished third in their new boat,
Maverick. Frank Westfield with Glynn Marples as crew, also in his new boat,
Vola Vola, finished fourth.

- Wednesday Series 6th September - Janettte Lock Trophy
Race
The South Westery wind honoured the Jannette Lock trophy with a beat to Balls
Lake and reach to Hutchins. It was a keen start by all and Devon Pickle
starting at the pin end carried the fleet over to the Wych channel to round
Quality Residential mark on the way. Close racing past the island in the force
3 warm breeze changed as Gridley put in a long port tack to consolidate a
healthy lead at Balls Lake. A tight spinnaker reach to Hutchins was a relaxed
affair and then a run against the strong spring flood took the column
procession back towards Parkstone Bay. Virgina Plain gybed early for Bay Post
closely followed by Barry French in Expeditious. Meanwhile Moonshadow and
Shooting Stars stayed out to follow the leader before heading in. Unfortunately
Moonshadow was ranked as a premature starter and disqualified. A fetch to the
finish line completed the race and the Series for 2006. Bruce Gridley and Terry
Berrett are the series winners in Devon Pickle. The Trophy winner will be drawn
at the Annual Dinner in March 2007.

- Monday Series 4th September
The last Monday racing saw 7 boats competing. Olympic courses and a gate start
saw Devon Pickle away and rounding the windward mark first with Expeditious and
Nurdle in close formation flying their kites. Gridley held on without the kite
to round Mitchells ahead and holding the lead for the remaining rounds. In
rapidly failing light the second race was a hurried affair and just one round.
Again Bruce Gridley had it measured and shot the gate early to get the lead
with just one spinnaker leg to Mitchells and a relaxed drive up the beat to win
both races and the series, with Expeditious a very close second after tie
breaking. Nurdle took the remaining place on the podium.

August - 1st September
- Saturday 26th August - RNLI
Pennant Race
Fourteen Wayfarers aggressively squeezed at the Platform end to start the
annual RNLI Pennant race with a collision and two boats disqualified for being
over the line. This is regarded by some as a practice race for Poole Week! At
the windward mark Shooting Stars led, the leg to Piccadilly Mark saw
Expeditious getting ahead in the stronger winds with Devon Pickle chasing. The
race officer had picked a good course as some good planning here made for an
enjoyable thrash for the heavy weights. The second Beat to Hutchins brought the
two boats together. One tack later and the fleet had caught up with Shooting
Stars back in second place fighting off Devon Pickle. The long run down to
Glovers via the Wych paid with the ebb current. Good boat speed and skill of
David and Anne Moss moved them into second place. At the end Jackie Welch
sailing Karena showed her superb helming ability to grab third place. Over an
hundred pounds has been raised for the RNLI.

- Wednesday Series 23rd
August
A beat to Quality Residential mark was mastered by Melinda Fisher sailing
Virgina Plain with husband Mark hoisting the spinnaker in record time for the
run to Glovers. Shooting Stars led the hot pursuit of the remaining fleet of
eleven. At Glovers Lucky Dip helmed by David Moss and crewed by wife Anne was
second chasing after Shooting Stars. The adverse tide put a stop to proceedings
as the wind died off the Brownsea houses stalling the fleet. Glynn Marples
sailing new steed Evenstar was now in the lead after a dash via Bell Buoy and
the reverse tide on the sandbanks side. Devon Pickle dived off with Spinnaker
to chase with Silver greyhound in-tow. At NatWest Glynn rounded incorrectly and
had to reverse his error luckily with tide in favour, the other competitors
still struggling to escape the clutches of the Brownsea Castle tide. Silver
Greyhound had the lead at NatWest. Devon Pickle in now lighter conditions
choosing the Red side out of south Deep found this was the best way to go the
North channel. Against all odds another pickle win and Series Winner with one
race in hand. Keith Cameron scoring a well deserved second place. Karena took
third on the last beat to the line with Evenstar fourth.

- Monday Series 21st

In gusty WNW winds the honed skills of Barry French and Mark Fisher secured the
first win of the evening. The second race was a reversal course and Bruce
Gridley and Mitra Wollard excelled with some superb spinnaker work after the
hard and harsh training courses of previous weeks! Frank Westfield with his new
boat took third place in the fading breeze and autumnal sunset.

In Unusual Switching South, south-westerly winds the late start saw 6 boats
turn out circulate on the Beat run type course. No Reaching today even if it
was blowing Force 5 at times! Just over an hours punishment saw Colin May
hone his skills ready for the European Championships in Holland. Barry French
led the way until all changed at Pottery pier. Even with a wineglass spinnaker
Watery Moments stayed in front leading out from Piccadilly. Jackie Welch put in
a strong performance securing third position. The course made it very much of a
procession. Only Devon Pickle moved up to fourth place on the second beat after
recovering from a bad port leg decision off the line and nearly falling out of
the boat avoiding the wedding party on board Maid of the Islands.

- Wednesday Series 16th August
Fourteen Wayfarers fought the flood tide to Drake mark. Wizzard and Karena were
looking well placed after a box end start. At Bell is was David Veal rounding
first in Moonshadow. Karena and Watery Moments closely followed. The fleet
spread out across the channel in the light and variable Southerly winds looking
for stronger tide and better winds after rounding Glovers. After rounding Stans
mark in fifth place Bruce Gridley opted for a flyer and headed out away from
the shore. With a shortened course he piloted Devon Pickle in to the outer
distance finishing mark just a few boat lengths behind Colin May in Watery
Moments. Barry French helming Expeditious finished a close third.

- Wednesday Series 9th August
Devon Pickle cleared the pin end to reach Stans mark first in the new flood
tide. Mis-interpretation of the ad-hoc course sent the kite up and an effective
turn about back to the start line. As the rest of the fleet sailed on too high
for Wills mark Devon Pickle realized their error and sailed with kite up
directly to Wills to join the end of the fleet. The fleet led by Colin May then
sailed round Quality Residential mark looking for Oyster mark. Moonshadow
rounded first after fetching off for it as Devon Pickle caught up just two boat
lengths away as they rounded and then sailed low on a screaming reach down
harbour to secure a healthy lead. Colin May chased hard making it a duel all
the way to the leeward mark. The course was repeated but without error and yet
another screaming three sail reach this time Gridley stuffed another first in
his bag to stretch his lead in the Series. Shooting Stars was gifted a third
place as Moonshadow sailed incorrectly through the now much wider finish line.
Colin May moves into second place in the series.

- Monday Series 7th
August
Competition is hotting up as the Monday Series draws to a close. The F2-4 fresh
cooling northerly gusts blew across Parkstone bay drying the evening air.
Getting away first Devon Pickle was second around Haven mark, following the
gate boat and intrepid series leaders Lynaire Rea and Mindy Fisher in Wizzard .
Peter Smith with crewman Ray Britain avoided the mealy on the start to clear
the fleet and score a third place. With secret weapon Matthew Gridley the
Pickle team got to grips with the spinnaker to overhaul Wizzard. With a swift
and perfect spinnaker hoist Barry French and Mark Fisher in Expeditious proved
better still to outwit Devon Pickle on the run.
In race two once again the Gridley duo steamed away with a clean pair of heels
to win the race from Expeditious. Some good lifts on the beat to Haven Mark
made it a delightful execution. Keith Cameron and Angela Garcia with cool heads
secured third place in this shorter race.

August
Light and variable conditions played havoc with the Wayfarer fleet. Colin May
made a restart and became last off the line but first at the windward mark
after a gamble going inshore to finish first and lead the Saturday series.
Great consistent team work from the Shooting Stars boat produced a second
place. Meanwhile Devon Pickle was running around like a Jack Russell on an
elastic lead reaching third place from last and then back to sixth. Lucky Dip
turned out as if it were the annual summer fete and scored third place after
some serious games with Blue Jay, Moonshadow and Devon Pickle on the
penultimate leg. Barry French and Mark Fisher crept up in Expeditious to steal
fifth place as some serious weed slowed Devon Pickle on the finish. Is this a
taste of Poole week?

- Arripay Pursuit Race, Saturday 29th July
Just five Wayfarers took up the challenge of this race, in grey and blustery
conditions. Shooting Stars, closely followed by Wizzard, started exactly 35
minutes after the first boats (Cadets), whilst Watery Moments held back for a
minute or so, as a result of Colin May's unique interpretation of the start
times. Barrie French took the wet seat in Evenstar, and directed Glynne to the
wrong windward mark. Watery Moments eventually recovered to take the lead in
Brownsea Roads, and even Colin was seen to sit out from time to time in the
gusts. The Wayfarers continued to tour the entire harbour for almost two hours,
Watery Moments finishing 14th overall.

- Monday series, 31st July
Winter made a temporary return to give very wet and blustery conditions for the
Monday outing of Wayfarers. Barry French (looked like Nelson on the Victory in
a gale 8!) was the Race Officer ably assisted by bosun Mark Fisher. The Olympic
style course was used with gate starts. As the start boat was buried in the
moored boats if was unfortunate for Nurdle to have to plan a re-entry to the
finish line as Devon Pickle slipped through just ahead in race two. In race one
it was more processional as the contenders warmed to the wintry conditions and
poor visibility. Lynaire and Mindy lead the Series with Bruce Gridley and David
Thompson moving closer in second and third place. Race One and Two! Same order!

- Wednesday Series 26th
July
Shooting Stars blitzed the the fleet again with a clean execution of sailing.
The beat to Rebbecks was contested closely by a mix of five boats on the
Olympic style course. At Stans mark Watery Moments was closing in for the kill,
but failed to gain the lead. Devon Pickle and Melinda Fisher, helming Virgina
Plain, fought it out to keep their wind following the leaders. On the
penultimate leg Devon Pickle was now the chasing boat and had the misfortune to
fight for water with the Coutance ferry at Stans. Once again the battle was on
for second place as David Veal helming Moonshadow joined the spinnaker race to
Haven mark with Colin May helming Watery Moments closing right up on Bruce
Gridley in Devon Pickle. At the mark it was very tight and a hot rounding for
all the boats in the incredible 25 degrees of heat and high humidity. The fleet
were treated to a thunder storm lightning display over Sandbanks afterwards on
the club veranda with a little cooling rain.

- Saturday 22nd July
One of the best days yet for Poole harbour racing saw 8 Wayfarers compete for
the Pin end of the line. The Now SW Wind was building to a F4 in brilliant
sunshine and Mediterranean temperatures after a storm and downpour. Cheeky
Gridley put in a Port Flyer but was put about by Shooting Stars making the beat
to Quality Residential Mark very close racing. In the shifting gusts coming
over Brownsea Is. Devon Pickle was showing her transom to the fleet once again.
The second Woodie Shooting Stars was giving chase with Blue Jay
sailing low with the kite not far behind. The Olympic course made for close
racing all afternoon. Pauline Snyders spinnaker skills put Shooting Stars
closer on the Run keeping Terry Berrett in Devon Pickle busy passing
information to the skipper. The New flood tide added another dimension to the
skills required to stay in front. At the finish of the full course Devon Pickle
had racked up a good 20 boat lead. Blue Jay was about the same behind Shooting
Stars.

- Wednesday 19th July
On the hottest July day ever the Wayfarers set off in a pleasant breeze. The
racers split into 2 groups on the first beat, avoiding the channel and tide.
Richard Readings after a good start with consistent super crew Sally Bishton
were first round No 23 buoy. Bruce Gridley and Colin May were in hot pursuit
for most of the race but Colin spotted an opportunity (weed on Shooting Stars
rudder!) and edged in front of Richard after Stans on the last leg in suddenly
very light winds. A huge downpour, correctly predicted by Bruce using his MI5
weather report, finished the evening for which the male participants were
grateful as club showers still lacking.

- "Lorelei Trophy"
Saturday 15th July
With a force 3 S.Easterly, the wind was just right for a long spinnaker run up
the harbour for the annual Wareham race to Redcliffe Y.C. Colin May in Watery
Moments held the lead into the river with Tony Millett & Malcolm Bell in
Half 'n Half not far behind. Eventually the wind went on the nose and with a
still ebbing tide we caught up with the Dolphins who had started half an hour
earlier. Half 'n Half briefly took the lead but was then overtaken by Watery
Moments before the course was shortened as we had made no progress for half an
hour. After a brief paddle to get round a corner, sailing commenced again to
get us up the river to the club for a welcome cream tea. After a tow back down
the river against the now flooding tide P.Y.C was reached just after7.30pm!

Superb Summer sailing conditions was enjoyed by a healthy turnout of the
Wayfarer fleet. A short Beat to No.26 saw Colin May judging it just right in
the ebb tide to turn first. Close behind Devon Pickle swung lower and hoisted
the kite with Barry French going even lower to try and escape the dirty wind of
the leader. Spreading out it was anybody's chance as they headed on a three
sail reach to Ellis Jones. With a good gusts good spinnaker work by Terry
Berrett once again got Devon Pickle safely in the lead for the evening, in the
F3-4 WSW wind. Barry French with crew Frank Westfield tormented Colin May for
second place as the fleet leaders fought the new Spring flood off North Haven.
Waiting in the wings Richard Readings moved Shooting Stars up the course on the
second lap to secure third place with new super-crew Sally Bishton.

Saturday 8th July
In a healthy force 4 SSW wind Barry French took the Wych channel to Rebbecks
and rounded first. On the spinnaker run back down the Wych Colin May and Bruce
Gridley were now at close quarters. Further down the fleet Glynne Marples and
Graham Snyder decided to wash the spinnaker. After rounding Ellis Jones a fast
rough ride ensued as the boats sailed out of the harbour and fetched No.3 Mark.
Leading boat Expeditious then took the scenic route via Old Harry, leaving
Devon Pickle looking good rounding Jones the Butcher first. On the second beat
into the beach Watery Moments now had the lead. Expeditious moved back into
second place all sails up at the Training Bank as spinnaker trouble slowed
Devon Pickle.

The days tropical storms passed and a sprightly drying SW Wind setup to
give some very close racing around the Olympic course. Richard Readings in
Shooting Stars never faltered, showing a clean pair of heels with crew Sally
Bishton in superb form yet again! At the last mark Colin May used his vast
experience to work his way into an attacking position for second place. Devon
Pickle now stuck with the kite still half way up lost ground. The new flood
tide gave advantage at the pin end to Moonshadow as she closed the finish line
in third place.

Saturday 1st July
In a SE breeze Watery Moments rounded the windward mark first. On the long
spinnaker run to Hutchins, Keith Cameron sailed Silver Greyhound higher and
rounded first. Bruce Gridley helmed Devon Pickle into the lead by the next mark
and rounded Barrel O First. The fleet closed on the return beat
with many place changes. Shooting Stars was leading by the ferry terminal. A
tactical move to a more windward course south of the main channel took Devon
Pickle nervously ever nearer to the finish line. With less wind inshore Watery
Moments sailed into last place leaving Silver Greyhound to capitalise. Shooting
Stars also suffered being inshore but claiming third place on the 2 hour
excursion of the far reaches on the harbour.

Nine Wayfarers contested the Box end with Moonshadow tacking for the ebb Tide
and leaving the fleet to decide the best route as Devon Pickle leadssome of the
fleet on what turned out to be a wild goose chase via salterns. There was no
fooling Mr Veal and Mindy Fisher spotted the mistake thus sailing the best
course to gain second place. A brillant recovery with the lightweight Sally on
board Ricardo Readings sealed a third place for Shooting Stars. Well pickled by
now Bruce Gridley tried a few experiments before recovering to sixth place.

- Saturday 17th June - Round The
Islands Trophy
In the hot summer sunshine it was an excellent day for Round the Islands Trophy
race. Dave Veal helming Moonshadow set the pace with good tactical decisions
and excellent boat speed. Winds and possible ebb tide closer to Brownsea proved
the way to go. Some over-cooking saw two chase boats over standing the first
mark. After Nat West mark Richard Readings and crew, Pauline Cinders, enjoyed
second place ahead of Expeditious until past Goathorn point. Expeditious was on
an adventure, seriously cutting the corner closing green island moved up to
second place. Bruce Gridley was playing the waiting game yet again. The long
reach to Stans spread the fleet again as they sought stronger winds. Boats
close and distant from Brownsea Island both benefited. Now in third place Devon
Pickle had a lucky break, tacking immediately at Stans out into the tide to
steam home in second place. Shooting Stars finished third, having chosen to
cover the more threatening Expeditious rather than the wayward Devon Pickle.
The race proved the unwritten rule that Wayfarers with many 8's in their sail
number have some kind of competitive advantage (sorry Barrie)!

The light evening breeze took the fleet around the North Channel with Virginia
Plain making easy work of it heading down to South Deep. Back to NC2 buoy crew
Sally Bishton was the good luck charm as Barry French sailed Expeditious into
the lead and with a faultless spinnaker hoist joined the new flood tide to
reach Trial mark first and subsequently win the race. Devon Pickle finished
second after some intense moments lee-bowing the tide finding slightly more
wind than Moonshadow and Virginia Plain.

in Moonshadow set the pace. Tony Millet in refurbished Half N Half was going
strong in second place. After the long haul to Hutchins mark the dynamic duo in
Devon Pickle nibbled away at the leader on the Run making it a three cornered
contest to reach Sanders sails. The Vice captain steered Wizard into forth
place with help from crew Heather Gurney. Red Tape secured third place with
some good shadowing techniques leaving half n half trying a three sail
beat.
- Monday Series 5th June
The second outing of a Wayfarer fleet in gentle SE breezes gave some good close
racing around a triangular course. In race 1 the gate boat W6288 took an early
lead to lose it both times on the gybe mark. Expeditious and Wizzard showing
superior spinnaker handling skills finished second and third. In race 2 as lead
boat again, Bruce Gridley with super crew Sally Bishton got a better lead and
much improved sail handling ability held first place with W9447 leading the
chasing bunch and finishing third. Barry French now leads the series by a
whisker.

Nine boats formed closely on the start line in the veering NW evening breeze.
Dave Veal helming Moonshadow showed a clean pair of heels established an early
lead reaching Bay Post first. Watery Moments and Virgina Plain helmed by
Melinda Fisher followed on the tight spinnaker reach to Morris Lane. On the
return beat to the line Bruce Gridley tacked at Quality Residential Mark to
lee-bow the fast ebb tide and this gained him the lead. On the second beat to
the line Colin May helming Watery Moments was gifted the lead. On the approach
to Bay Post, Devon Pickle was lucky with the lighter shifting winds to regain
first place and the lead in the series.

In near gale conditions two Wayfarers ventured out. Nurdle, helmed by David
Thompson, did a port flyer to get ahead on the beat to Rebbecks mark. Bruce
Gridley, having turned the boat around after getting in irons before the start,
headed away on starboard to play catch up. Devon Pickle rounded Rebbecks first
and then flew the kite for a while down the sheltered side of Brownsea Island
to reach Lathams. Another kite reach to Haven Mark extended the lead. On the
second round Nurdle had a knockdown in a squall while Devon Pickle was under
jib alone sailing a leg ahead down to Latham the second time in more sheltered
waters.

All racing cancelled at PYC due to high winds
- Wednesday 17th May
In rain squalls just 3 wayfarers ventured out on the falling tide and F5 winds.
In heavy rain the fleet got away with a beat to NC2 mark. Devon Pickle rounded
first to run back to Sanders sails. Red Tape was chasing hard and stayed in
site through the gloom. Wide Buoy not using the kite followed behind. After one
round a second round saw the wind going to the Sw direction and a 2 sail plane
from Stans mark saw Bruce Gridley notch up a much need first place in the
Wednesday series.

round Stans mark with a good lead. Moonshadow closed in however to round
Piccadilly second. On the Fetch to Hutchins mark Shooting Stars took up the
chase to start the long run in the gusting wind to Glovers mark. Early
spinnaker drops down harbour were the order of the day as the wind bends and
convergences brought stronger gusts. Devon Pickle was revelling in the
conditions and Bruce Gridley secured another first to keep the lead in the
series.

In light winds and warm sunshine the fleet got away against the flood tide.
Devon Pickle went the Northerly route with weed in tow as Maverick
and Virginia Plain swept past either side! The Brownsea wall proved the way to
go as Watery Moments rounded Bell first. Richard Readings helming Shooting
Stars was second round but then sailed too close to tall trees on the Island
and lost his advantage. David Veal in Moonshadow stayed out too far missing the
Zephyrs of wind. Devon Pickle wiggled with the wind down through the Wych
channel and rounded Quality Residential Mark ahead. On the final reach to the
line Barry French seized an opportunity beating Shooting Stars to claim third
place.

- First Saturday race 22nd April
2006
In moderate conditions five boats raced around a multi-lap course. Tom Lock in
Virgina Plain rounded Bell first with David Veal in close contest after a route
via the Wytch Channel. The North channel proved the better route even after the
change of Main channel workings of the winter. David Veal routed that way the
second time to win. Devon Pickle was trying all ideas and finished third after
some serious experimentation!

- Easter Series,
15-17th April
In a switching NE F3 wind the fleet got away from the Committee boat line to
reach the windward mark "MDL Youth" very much as a pack. Richard
Readings steered W8088 round first with W6288 second and in hot pursuit. On the
multi-round course it was close again at the leeward mark. Bruce Gridley urged
Devon Pickle into the lead on the downwind leg to win after three rounds. In
race 2 W8088 took the lead at No.41 to complete two laps and win. Race 3 was a
figure of eight course, W8088 again taking the lead to win the once round
circuit in a lighter F2-3 Westerly. All still to play for in the last race,
Virginia Plain sailed by Tom Lock was first round Hutchins with Devon Pickle
close second. The fleet bunched again at Piccadilly and a two sail reach,
planing at times, kept the fleet together right up to the last leg where
Moonshadow rounded first to lead. Devon Pickle finished second with a tactical
reach to the pin end of the line just missing overall victory. Shooting Stars
won the mini series.
